Brits are helping friends and relatives beat the credit crunch with gifts designed to save them money. In the last fortnight, electrical specialist Comet has seen a marked increase in sales of coffee machines and breadmakers up 433%* and 1275%* respectively. With coffee machines helping Brits save up to £500 on a daily Starbucks and breadmakers producing around three loaves for less than the price of one in the supermarket , consumers look set to have a leaner 2009.
New research of 1000 Comet customers also found that Brits would like to receive practical presents that they need, with 90% of those questioned preferring a new kettle or replacement vacuum cleaner rather than a luxury item. This trend is reflected in sales of these appliances with kettles and vacuum cleaners increasing by 238% and 52% respectively in the last two weeks*. Chocolate fountains, a popular choice in 2007 are now bottom of the wish list, below microwaves and toasters.
Bob Darke, Commercial Director at Comet comments: “Christmas shoppers are taking advantage of great deals with many opting for practical gifts for friends and family that will help them save money in the longer term. This week we’ll have many more deals on a wide range of electrical products to appeal to all our customers.”
