Women are as tech savvy as their male counterparts, new research out today shows. Whilst traditionally men may have taken charge of gadgets and gizmos, women now believe their tech-xpertise rivals that of the opposite sex.
In the biggest technology report commissioned in recent years, electrical specialist Comet found that the gap between the sexes is closing with 48% of women now feeling more comfortable with technology than ever before. Whilst men felt equally comfortable (47%) only 15% would now describe themselves as the tech-head of the household with 13% even admitting to turning to their partner for advice on setting up and operating new technology.
Furthermore, women are feeling increasingly confident setting up their own technology and would happily set up their laptop or freeview box - only 4% are daunted by installing their own HDTV and 7% a surround sound system.
When asked what changes technology has made to their lives, half of women claim they now rely on the latest gadgets to make their lives tick (v. 56% of men). Their ‘text life’ has made them more confident when making the first move with men (13% v. 12% of men) and 61% are now interacting more regularly with their friends compared to 54% of men.
However, whilst embracing all things technical, multi-tasking females are not completely abandoning more traditional products. In recent years, 64% of women said they’d created a real photo album despite 86% having access to internet photo sharing sites and 46% had hung onto their fountain pen even though they own a computer (71%) or laptop (63%).
Gadget journalist and tech expert Susi Weaser says; “Women are definitely as tech savvy as men these days. We love our gadgets as much as the next person. Technology is always developing and in my opinion this can only be a good thing as I use it for everything. It makes keeping in touch with friends easier, makes sharing content such as pictures a doddle and thanks to the internet we have information on literally anything at our fingertips.”
Bill Moir, Head of Marketing at Comet said: “This in depth study shows the extent to which both men and women are embracing new technology. It appears that men are no longer the sole IT Director in the home, as women become increasingly tech savvy and reap the benefits of today’s gadgets and gizmos.”
